Number Format Options

Choose how your page numbers appear: simple numbers (1, 2, 3), formatted with "Page 1," total page count ("1 of 10"), or decorative style ("- 1 -"). You can also set the starting page (to skip a cover page) and the starting number value (e.g., start numbering from "5" if your document is part of a larger work).

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I add page numbers starting from page 2 (skip the cover)?
Use the "Skip First N Pages" option and set it to 1. This will add page numbers to all pages except the first one (your cover page). The numbering will start from page 2 in the document, displayed as "Page 1" (or your chosen starting number). This is the standard approach for reports and academic papers with a title page.
Can I add Roman numerals or letters instead of numbers?
Currently our tool supports Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3...). For Roman numerals (i, ii, iii) or alphabetic page markers, you would need a more advanced tool like Adobe Acrobat Pro, LibreOffice Writer, or Microsoft Word (export to PDF after adding page numbers). These are commonly used in front matter sections of books and theses.
What font is used for the page numbers?
Our tool uses Helvetica (PDF standard font) which is clean, professional, and universally supported in PDF viewers. The font size is fully adjustable from 6pt to 36pt. Most professional documents use 10–12pt for page numbers. The color is also fully customizable — use black (#000000) for print, or gray (#666666) for a more subtle look.
Will adding page numbers change the content of my PDF?
No. Page numbers are added as a new transparent overlay layer on top of existing content. The original text, images, and layout of your PDF remain completely unchanged. Page numbers appear in the margin area and are positioned with enough offset to avoid overlapping with your document content.
Can I add page numbers to a password-protected PDF?
No. Password-protected PDFs with editing restrictions cannot be modified. You would first need to remove the password protection using the PDF owner password. Our tool will display an error if it encounters a restricted PDF. Once restrictions are removed, you can add page numbers normally.
Is my PDF file uploaded to a server?
No. Your PDF never leaves your device. All processing — including adding page numbers — happens entirely in your browser using the pdf-lib JavaScript library. Your document contents are completely private and are never sent to any server.
