What Is the Mid-Market Exchange Rate?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between a currency's buy (bid) and sell (ask) rates on the global currency market. It's the fairest benchmark rate — the one shown on Google Finance and Reuters. Banks and exchange bureaus add a margin of 1–5% on top of this rate when you physically exchange money.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the exchange rates real-time?
Yes. We fetch live exchange rates from an open currency API each time you convert. Rates reflect the latest mid-market data. Banks and exchange bureaus add their own margins above these rates, so the rate you get for a physical transaction will differ slightly.
Why is the airport exchange rate so different?
Airports and hotels charge 5–15% markups due to convenience pricing. Banks typically add 1–3%. Online transfers via services like Wise or Revolut typically offer rates very close to the mid-market rate shown here. For travel, using a no-foreign-fee credit card is usually best.
How often do exchange rates change?
Major currency pairs (USD, EUR, GBP, JPY) fluctuate every second during trading hours. Currency markets operate Monday–Friday across global financial centers (London, New York, Tokyo, Sydney). Weekend rates are typically fixed at Friday's closing rate.
What currencies does this converter support?
