Free PDF Compressor – Reduce PDF File Size Online
By RapidTool Team · Last updated: September 2026
Our free PDF compressor reduces the file size of any PDF instantly, right in your browser. Choose from three compression levels — low (best quality), medium (balanced), or high (smallest size) — and see the exact bytes saved before downloading. No file is ever uploaded to any server.
Compression Levels Guide
| LEVEL | REDUCTION | BEST FOR | QUALITY |
| Low | ~20% | Archival, print-ready documents | Excellent — near original |
| Medium | ~40% | Email attachments, web sharing | Good — barely noticeable loss |
| High | ~60% | Mobile viewing, storage saving | Acceptable — some quality loss |
Why Compress a PDF?
Large PDFs slow down email delivery, fail to upload to portals with file size limits, take longer to load on mobile devices, and consume excessive storage. Compressing a PDF is essential for: email attachments (most services limit to 10–25MB), uploading to government or job application portals, sharing on WhatsApp or other messaging apps, and reducing storage costs on cloud services.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does PDF compression work?
PDF compression works by applying more aggressive lossless or lossy compression to the data streams inside the PDF, removing redundant metadata, optimizing font embedding, and reducing image resolution. Our tool uses the pdf-lib library to re-process and re-save the PDF with optimized compression settings while keeping the content intact.
Will compression affect the quality of my PDF?
Low compression has virtually no visible quality impact. Medium compression may slightly reduce image clarity but text remains perfectly sharp. High compression can noticeably reduce image quality but is acceptable for text-heavy documents viewed on screen. For print-quality documents, use Low or Medium compression only.
Why is the compressed file not much smaller than the original?
Some PDFs are already well-compressed, especially those generated by modern software. PDFs that mainly contain text (no images) have very little room for additional compression. The biggest size reductions come from PDFs with large embedded images, fonts, or other media. Scanned document PDFs typically show the largest compression gains.
Is there a maximum file size for compression?
There is no server-side limit since compression happens entirely in your browser. Very large files (100MB+) may require significant time and memory. We recommend using files under 100MB for smooth performance. For extremely large PDFs, consider splitting them into sections first using our PDF Page Extractor tool.
What's the maximum email attachment size for PDFs?
Gmail allows attachments up to 25MB. Outlook allows 20MB. Yahoo Mail allows 25MB. Most corporate email systems limit attachments to 10–15MB. If your PDF exceeds these limits, use our compressor to bring it under the threshold, or use a file sharing service like Google Drive or Dropbox and share the link instead.
