Free Robots.txt Generator – Create Your robots.txt File Online

By RapidTool Team  ·  Last updated: September 2026

A robots.txt file tells search engine crawlers which pages or sections of your website they can or cannot access. Placed at the root of your domain (e.g., yoursite.com/robots.txt), it uses the Robots Exclusion Protocol to communicate with web crawlers. Our free generator creates a properly formatted robots.txt with custom rules for any bot — including AI training crawlers.

Robots.txt Syntax Reference

User-agent: *Applies rules to all bots. Use a specific bot name for targeted rules.
Disallow: /admin/Prevents bots from crawling paths starting with /admin/
Allow: /public/Explicitly allows a path even within a disallowed directory
Sitemap: urlPoints bots to your XML sitemap for better crawl coverage
Disallow: /*?*Blocks all URLs with query parameters using wildcards
Disallow: /*.pdf$Blocks all PDF files using end-of-URL anchor

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I place the robots.txt file on my website?
Always place robots.txt at the root of your domain: https://yoursite.com/robots.txt. It must be publicly accessible without authentication. Robots.txt placed in subdirectories (e.g., /blog/robots.txt) has NO effect — it only works at the domain root. After uploading, verify it's accessible by visiting the URL in your browser.
Does blocking pages with robots.txt hide them from Google?
Robots.txt prevents Googlebot from crawling those pages, but it does NOT prevent them from appearing in search results. Google can still index a disallowed URL if other pages link to it — it just won't be able to read the content. To completely prevent a page from appearing in Google, use the noindex meta tag or X-Robots-Tag header instead.
Should I block AI bots like GPTBot and anthropic-ai?
Many website owners now block AI training crawlers to prevent their content from being used to train large language models without permission. Use the "Block All AI Bots" preset to automatically add rules for GPTBot (OpenAI), anthropic-ai (Anthropic/Claude), CCBot (Common Crawl), and Google-Extended (Google AI). Note that some AI bots do not respect robots.txt.
Is robots.txt a security measure?
No — robots.txt is a public file, visible to everyone. Never rely on it to hide sensitive content like admin pages, login pages, or confidential data. Malicious crawlers and hackers often read robots.txt specifically to find paths you're trying to hide. Use proper authentication, server-side access controls, and password protection to secure sensitive areas.
How long does it take for Google to respect robots.txt changes?
Google typically recrawls robots.txt every 24 hours. Changes take effect on the next crawl. For urgent changes, submit a new crawl request in Google Search Console under Settings → Crawling. You can also use Google Search Console's robots.txt tester to validate your file and see how Googlebot interprets it before going live.
