Frequently Asked Questions

What is a favicon and why does my website need one?
A favicon (short for "favorite icon") is the small icon that appears in browser tabs, bookmarks, browser history, and search results. Without a favicon, browsers show a generic default icon, which looks unprofessional and makes your site harder to find among open tabs. A favicon also appears on the home screen when users add your site as a PWA on mobile devices.
What is the best image to use for a favicon?
The best favicon source images are: square (1:1 aspect ratio), simple and recognizable at small sizes, with good contrast, and ideally with a transparent background (PNG). Logos with fine text detail don't work well at 16×16px. Use the first letter of your brand name or a simple iconic mark. SVG files produce the crispest results since they're rendered at each size without scaling artifacts.
How do I add a favicon to my website?
Upload the favicon files to your website's root directory (or /images/ or /assets/). Then add the HTML snippet from our generator into the <head> section of every page. In WordPress, go to Appearance → Customize → Site Identity → Site Icon. In Shopify, go to Online Store → Preferences → Favicon. In Squarespace, go to Design → Logo & Title → Browser Icon.
Do I still need a .ico file?
The .ico format was the original favicon format, but modern browsers fully support PNG favicons. Including a 32×32 PNG as your main favicon covers all modern browsers. Some developers still include a single favicon.ico for legacy IE compatibility, but this is rarely necessary today. Our HTML snippet uses PNG files which work on all current browsers, Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
What is an Apple Touch Icon?
The Apple Touch Icon (180×180px) is displayed when a user adds your website to their iPhone or iPad home screen. Without it, iOS uses a screenshot of your page instead. The 180×180 size covers all current iOS device resolutions. Our generator automatically creates this size and includes the apple-touch-icon link tag in the HTML snippet.
