An EMI (Equated Monthly Installment) is the fixed monthly payment for repaying a loan. Our free EMI calculator shows your exact monthly installment, total interest payable, principal vs interest breakdown chart, and a complete yearly amortization schedule — for home loans, car loans, personal loans, and education loans.

EMI Formula Explained

EMI = [P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ] ÷ [(1 + r)ⁿ − 1]

Where P = Principal amount, r = Monthly interest rate (Annual Rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100), n = Total months (Years × 12). For example, a ₹10 lakh loan at 9% for 5 years has a monthly EMI of approximately ₹20,758.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an EMI and how does it work?
EMI stands for Equated Monthly Installment. It's a fixed monthly payment that covers both principal repayment and interest. Early in the loan, most of the EMI goes toward interest. As the loan matures, more goes toward principal. The total EMI amount remains constant throughout the loan tenure.
How does loan tenure affect EMI?
Longer tenure → lower EMI but higher total interest. Shorter tenure → higher EMI but much less total interest paid. For example, a ₹30 lakh home loan at 8.5%: 10-year tenure has EMI of ~₹37,194 and total interest of ~₹14.6 lakh. 20-year tenure has EMI of ~₹26,035 but total interest of ~₹32.5 lakh — more than double.
What is an amortization schedule?
An amortization schedule shows the year-by-year breakdown of your loan repayment — how much of each year's payments goes to principal, how much to interest, and the remaining outstanding balance. It helps you visualize how your debt reduces over time and plan for prepayments.
How can I reduce my loan EMI?
Options to reduce EMI: 1) Negotiate a lower interest rate, 2) Make a larger down payment to reduce the principal, 3) Increase the loan tenure (though this raises total interest cost), 4) Make periodic prepayments to reduce outstanding balance and request EMI reduction from lender.
