Frequently Asked Questions
How does PDF to Word conversion work?
Our tool uses PDF.js — Mozilla's open-source PDF rendering library — to extract text content from each page of your PDF directly in your browser. The extracted text is then formatted and packaged into your chosen output format (DOCX, TXT, or RTF). No file is ever sent to a server — conversion happens entirely on your device.
Why does the converted document lose its formatting?
PDF is a fixed-layout format — it stores content as positioned elements, not as flowing text with structure. When converting, we extract the raw text content, which may not preserve the original columns, tables, headers, or precise spacing. For complex PDFs with tables and graphics, Adobe Acrobat Pro or a dedicated OCR service will produce better layout fidelity.
Can this tool convert scanned PDFs (image-based PDFs)?
No. This tool can only extract text from PDFs that contain actual text layers. Scanned PDFs (where pages are images of physical documents) require OCR (Optical Character Recognition) to extract text. For scanned PDFs, use our Image to Text (OCR) tool, or dedicated OCR services like Adobe Acrobat, ABBYY FineReader, or Google Drive's built-in OCR feature.
Is there a file size limit for PDF conversion?
There is no strict file size limit since all processing happens in your browser. However, very large PDFs (50MB+) or PDFs with hundreds of pages may take longer to process depending on your device's speed and available memory. For best performance, use PDFs under 50MB with modern browsers like Chrome or Firefox.
What's the difference between DOCX, TXT, and RTF formats?
DOCX is the Microsoft Word format — best for editing in Word, Google Docs, or LibreOffice with font formatting preserved. TXT is plain text with no formatting — ideal for code editors, pasting into other tools, or minimal-footprint storage. RTF (Rich Text Format) is a universal format that most word processors can open, with basic formatting support.
Is my PDF file uploaded to your servers?
No. Your PDF file is never sent to any server. All conversion processing happens locally in your web browser using JavaScript and the PDF.js library. Your file contents remain completely private on your own device.
