Free WHOIS Lookup – Find Domain Registration Information Online
By RapidTool Team · Last updated: September 2026
Our free WHOIS lookup tool uses the modern RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) to retrieve domain registration information for any domain. Find out who registered a domain, when it was created, when it expires, which registrar manages it, and what nameservers it uses — all in seconds, without any signup.
What Information Does WHOIS Show?
📅 Registration DatesWhen the domain was first created and last updated
⏰ Expiry DateWhen the domain registration expires and may become available
🏢 RegistrarThe company where the domain is registered (GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.)
🌐 NameserversDNS servers that handle the domain's DNS records
🔒 Domain StatusLock status, transfer restrictions, and ICANN status codes
🌍 CountryCountry of the domain registrant (if not privacy-protected)
WHOIS vs RDAP – What's the Difference?
Traditional WHOIS uses a plain-text query protocol (port 43). RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is its modern replacement, returning structured JSON data via HTTPS. RDAP is more reliable, better standardized, and supports internationalized domain names. Our tool uses RDAP through the ICANN RDAP bootstrap service for the most accurate results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does WHOIS show limited or redacted information?
Since 2018, ICANN's WHOIS policy in line with GDPR has required registrars to redact personal information (name, email, phone, address) from public WHOIS records. This is called "WHOIS privacy" or "RDAP privacy". Registrars now show only technical information (registrar, dates, nameservers) unless the registrant has opted to show their details.
How do I find out who owns a domain if WHOIS is redacted?
You can submit an official request through the registrar's abuse contact or use ICANN's Registrar Communication form for legitimate purposes. Law enforcement agencies can request full registrant information through legal channels. For business purposes, some domain intelligence services provide ownership data through legal agreements with registries.
How can I check if a domain is about to expire?
Look at the "Expires" date in our WHOIS lookup. Our tool also shows a visual timeline and calculates how many days until the domain expires. Domains typically enter a 30-day "Redemption Period" after expiry before becoming available for anyone to register. Set a reminder before expiry to avoid losing a valuable domain.
What does "clientTransferProhibited" mean in domain status?
"clientTransferProhibited" means the domain is locked against unauthorized transfer to another registrar. This is a standard security measure that most registrars apply by default. To transfer a domain, you must unlock it through your registrar's control panel first. Other common status codes include clientDeleteProhibited and clientUpdateProhibited.
Can I look up WHOIS for any domain extension?
Our tool supports most major TLDs including .com, .net, .org, .io, .co, .info, .biz, and hundreds of country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) and new gTLDs that publish data via RDAP. Some ccTLDs (like .de, .uk) have their own WHOIS systems and may return limited data through our tool.
