Frequently Asked Questions

What is UTC and why is it the standard?
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the primary time standard used worldwide. It replaced GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) as the global standard in 1972. All other time zones are defined as offsets from UTC — for example, IST (India Standard Time) is UTC+5:30, and EST (Eastern Standard Time) is UTC-5.
What is Daylight Saving Time (DST) and how does it affect conversions?
Daylight Saving Time (DST) is when clocks are moved forward 1 hour in spring and back in autumn. Not all countries observe DST. The US, Canada, and most of Europe do; India, Japan, and China do not. Our converter uses your browser's timezone database which accounts for DST automatically.
What is the best time for an international meeting between the US and India?
The overlap between US business hours and India business hours is narrow. An 8:00–9:00 AM EST meeting time converts to 6:30–7:30 PM IST — workable for both sides. Evening US time (5–7 PM EST) converts to early morning IST (3:30–5:30 AM) which is too early for India.
How many time zones are there in the world?
There are 24 standard time zones based on longitude divisions, but in practice over 38 unique UTC offsets exist due to half-hour and quarter-hour offsets used by countries like India (UTC+5:30), Nepal (UTC+5:45), and Australia's states. Our tool covers 400+ named time zones.
