Frequently Asked Questions
How many images can I add to make a GIF?
There is no strict limit on the number of frames. However, GIFs with many frames at high resolution will produce larger file sizes and take longer to generate. For smooth animations, 10–30 frames is typical. For slideshow-style GIFs, even 3–5 frames works well. Most platforms (Twitter, Discord, Slack) have GIF upload size limits of 5–15MB, so keep that in mind.
Why do GIFs look washed out or have poor colors?
GIF format is limited to 256 colors per frame, which is a fundamental technical limitation. This causes color banding on photos with gradients. To minimize this: use lower quality numbers (closer to 1) for better dithering, use images with fewer distinct colors, or consider using WebP or MP4 video format instead if your target platform supports it.
What is the best frame delay for a smooth animation?
Frame delay is measured in milliseconds. 50ms = 20fps (very smooth), 100ms = 10fps (smooth), 150ms = ~7fps (slightly choppy), 200ms = 5fps (slideshow), 500ms = 2fps (slow transitions). For most animation purposes, 80–120ms provides smooth playback. Note that most browsers have a minimum GIF delay of 20ms; delays below this are often capped at 100ms.
Can I create a GIF from a video?
This tool creates GIFs from still images. To create a GIF from a video, first extract frames from the video using tools like VLC (Tools → Snapshot), FFmpeg (ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -vf fps=10 frame%d.png), or online video-to-GIF converters. Then upload those extracted frames to our GIF maker to assemble them into an animated GIF.
What platforms support animated GIFs?
Animated GIFs are universally supported across: all web browsers, Twitter/X, Facebook, Instagram (via Giphy), Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, iMessage, Android Messages, Reddit, Imgur, and virtually every email client. GIF remains the most universally compatible animated image format despite its technical limitations. Modern alternatives like APNG and WebP offer better quality but have less universal support.
