Frequently Asked Questions

What is OCR and how does it work?
OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is technology that detects and extracts text from images. It works by analyzing pixel patterns in the image to identify individual characters, then combining them into words and sentences using language models. Modern OCR like Tesseract uses neural networks trained on millions of text samples to accurately recognize characters across different fonts and styles.
What types of images give the best OCR results?
OCR works best on: high-resolution images (300+ DPI), clear black text on white background, printed text (vs handwriting), horizontal text (not rotated), minimal noise or artifacts, and sharp focus. Low-quality, blurry, rotated, or handwritten text will produce lower confidence scores. For best results, use screenshots directly from digital sources rather than photos of printed materials.
Can this tool recognize handwritten text?
Tesseract OCR has limited support for handwriting recognition. It works reasonably well for neat, block-letter handwriting but struggles with cursive or heavily stylized writing. For handwriting recognition, Google's Vision API or Microsoft Azure Computer Vision offer better handwriting-specific models. Our tool is optimized for printed and digital text.
What does the confidence score mean?
The confidence score (0–100%) represents Tesseract's certainty about the accuracy of the extracted text. A score above 80% is excellent and the text is likely very accurate. 60–79% is good, with minor errors possible. Below 50% indicates the image quality is poor or the content is difficult to read — you should review and correct the output manually.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. Your image is never sent to any server. All OCR processing happens entirely in your browser using Tesseract.js — a WebAssembly port of the Tesseract OCR engine. Your images and any extracted text remain completely private on your own device.
Can I extract text from a PDF using this tool?
This tool works with image files (JPG, PNG, WEBP, etc.). For PDFs with embedded text layers, use our PDF to Text tool instead. For scanned PDFs (image-based), take a screenshot of each page and use this OCR tool to extract the text, or use Adobe Acrobat's built-in OCR feature for full document processing.
