SVG vs PNG — Key Differences
📐 SVG (Vector)
- Infinitely scalable without quality loss
- Small file size for simple graphics
- Editable as XML/code
- Best for logos, icons, illustrations
- Not for photos or complex images
🖼️ PNG (Raster)
- Fixed pixel dimensions
- Supports transparency
- Compatible with every app and platform
- Best for photos, screenshots, UI assets
- Quality degrades when scaled up
Frequently Asked Questions
Why would I convert SVG to PNG?
SVG files aren't supported everywhere. Email clients, many messaging apps, older browsers, and some document formats don't render SVG. Converting to PNG ensures your graphic displays correctly everywhere. It's also required when uploading to platforms like Twitter, Instagram, or Amazon that don't accept SVG files. Use 2× or 3× scale for sharp display on Retina/HiDPI screens.
What scale factor should I use?
Use 1× for standard screen display. Use 2× for Retina/HiDPI displays (MacBooks, iPhone, modern Android). Use 3× for very high resolution needs or print at 72DPI. For print at 300DPI, multiply your desired physical size in inches by 300 and set that as the pixel width. Most web and app assets work well at 2×.
Can I convert an SVG with custom fonts to PNG?
SVGs that use web fonts (Google Fonts, custom fonts via @font-face) may not render those fonts correctly in the converter since the fonts need to be loaded. For best results, convert text to paths in your SVG editor (Figma, Illustrator, Inkscape) before converting. SVGs that use system fonts (Arial, Georgia, sans-serif) will render correctly.
How does PNG to SVG tracing work?
PNG to SVG tracing (also called vectorization) converts pixel data into vector paths. Our tool uses edge detection to find boundaries between dark and light areas and converts them into SVG path elements. This works well for simple logos, icons, silhouettes, and line art. For complex photographs or gradients, professional tools like Adobe Illustrator's Image Trace, Inkscape's Trace Bitmap, or Vector Magic produce better results.
What is the maximum output size for SVG to PNG?
Our browser-based converter supports output up to 8000×8000 pixels. Very large outputs (4000×4000 and above) may require significant memory and processing time. For extremely large format outputs (billboard printing, etc.), use a desktop application like Inkscape which can export at arbitrary resolutions without browser memory limitations.
