Free Hash Generator – MD5, SHA-256, SHA-512 Online Hash Tool
By RapidTool Team · Last updated: September 2026
Our free hash generator creates cryptographic hash values for any text or file using MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, and SHA-512 algorithms. Use it to generate checksums, verify file integrity, hash passwords for comparison, or learn how different hashing algorithms work.
Which Hash Algorithm Should I Use?
SHA-256 is the industry standard for most use cases — secure, fast, and universally supported. SHA-512 offers slightly more security with a longer hash. MD5 and SHA-1 are considered cryptographically broken for security purposes but are still used for file checksums and non-security applications. Never use MD5 for password hashing — use bcrypt, Argon2, or PBKDF2 instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a hash and what is it used for?
A hash is a fixed-length string generated from input data using a mathematical function. The same input always produces the same hash, but you can't reverse a hash back to the original data. Uses include: verifying file integrity (checksums), storing passwords securely, digital signatures, and data deduplication.
Is MD5 still safe to use?
MD5 is broken for cryptographic security — collision attacks are possible. Never use MD5 to hash passwords or for security-critical applications. However, MD5 is still fine for non-security purposes like generating unique identifiers or verifying file downloads where attacks aren't a concern.
Why do the same words produce different hashes in MD5 vs SHA-256?
Different algorithms use different mathematical operations and produce different-length outputs. MD5 produces a 128-bit (32 hex character) hash. SHA-256 produces 256 bits (64 hex characters). SHA-512 produces 512 bits (128 hex characters). The algorithms are entirely different mathematical functions.
Can I use this tool to hash files?
Yes — switch to "Hash File" mode and upload any file. The hash is computed directly in your browser using the Web Crypto API. The file is never uploaded anywhere.
